A Relaxing Two-Day Getaway to Fukuoka and Harazuru Onsen

I recently took a one-night, two-day trip to Fukuoka, combining historical sightseeing, hot springs, and local cuisine. It was a refreshing journey filled with beautiful scenery, cultural discoveries, and great food.

Visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

I departed Haneda Airport on ANA Flight NH249 at 10:15 a.m. and arrived at Fukuoka Airport at 12:05 p.m. After picking up a rental car, I headed directly to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

When I arrived around 1:00 p.m., the temporary shrine building was undergoing demolition work. Before exploring the grounds, I took a short break and enjoyed a freshly baked Umegae Mochi, one of Dazaifu’s famous local treats.

Afterward, I offered a prayer at the shrine, purchased a goshuin (temple stamp), and continued on to my next destination.

Walking Through Akizuki Castle Ruins

At around 3:00 p.m., I arrived at the Akizuki Castle Ruins.

A parking attendant recommended two highlights: the Nagayamon Gate and the Kuromon Gate. I walked beneath rows of cherry trees leading toward the gates. Although it was summer, I couldn’t help imagining how spectacular the scenery must be during the cherry blossom season in April.

The loud chorus of cicadas filled the air, reminding me how different the atmosphere was from Tokyo. The combination of historical surroundings and the sounds of summer made for a memorable visit.

Relaxing at Harazuru Onsen Taisenkaku

Around 4:30 p.m., I checked into Taisenkaku, a traditional ryokan in Harazuru Onsen.

I stayed in a detached guest room overlooking a beautiful garden. Even the private bath in the room was fed by natural hot spring water, and the distinct mineral scent immediately created a relaxing atmosphere.

My first stop was the public bath. As I soaked in the hot spring, I felt warmth spread through my body, melting away the fatigue from travel and sightseeing.

Afterward, I bought a can of Kirin Ichiban beer from a vending machine. The room also included complimentary bottles of Ukiha natural spring water, which were perfect for rehydrating after the bath.

Following dinner, I enjoyed a 60-minute massage and then watched Japan’s men’s volleyball team play Belgium in the Volleyball Nations League before going to bed.

Breakfast with a View of the Chikugo River

The next morning began with a buffet breakfast.

I enjoyed curry rice, fried chicken, natto, seaweed, coffee, and several other dishes. From the restaurant, I had a beautiful view of the Chikugo River, making for a peaceful start to the day.

Learning About the Gold Seal at Fukuoka City Museum

After checking out at 10:00 a.m., I visited the Fukuoka City Museum.

There, I learned about the famous Gold Seal (King of Na Gold Seal), which was bestowed by Emperor Guangwu of the Later Han Dynasty upon the ruler of Na, an ancient polity in Japan.

Seeing the actual seal was fascinating. What surprised me most was its size. Having seen photographs and illustrations for many years, I had imagined it to be much larger. In reality, it was remarkably small, which somehow made its historical significance feel even greater.

Lunch at Chikae, a Traditional Hakata Restaurant

At 1:00 p.m., I had lunch at Chikae, a well-known traditional restaurant in Tenjin.

The meal included three varieties of fresh bluefin tuna sashimi, simmered fish head, assorted tempura, miso soup with swimming crab, chawanmushi, and mentaiko. Every dish was beautifully prepared, showcasing the quality of Fukuoka’s seafood and culinary traditions.

Visiting Shikanoshima’s Gold Seal Park

After lunch, I drove to Gold Seal Park on Shikanoshima Island.

The observation deck offered spectacular views of the sea and surrounding landscape. The peaceful scenery was incredibly relaxing. Having just learned about the Gold Seal at the museum, visiting the location associated with its discovery made the historical story feel much more tangible.

The park also features a replica of the Gold Seal, which serves as a popular photo spot.

Exploring Fukuoka Castle

My next stop was Fukuoka Castle.

As I walked through the extensive castle grounds, I admired the impressive stone walls that still remain today. They provided a glimpse into the scale and importance of the castle during the Edo period.

Before leaving, I purchased a commemorative castle stamp (gojoin), a perfect souvenir from the visit.

Wrapping Up the Trip at Fukuoka Airport

I arrived back at Fukuoka Airport around 5:00 p.m.

Before my flight, I enjoyed a bowl of tonkotsu ramen at Hakata Ikkousha. It was the perfect final meal of the trip and a fitting farewell to Fukuoka’s renowned food culture.

Afterward, I visited the South Wing Card Lounge. My EPOS Card was not eligible for access, but I was able to enter by presenting my ANA Gold Card.

Guests could choose either a soft drink or a beer. I opted for a Kirin Ichiban beer and relaxed while reflecting on the trip. The coffee also looked excellent and was tempting, but I decided to stick with the beer.

Finally, I boarded ANA Flight NH268, departing Fukuoka at 7:10 p.m., and headed back home.

Final Thoughts

This trip offered a wonderful balance of history, relaxation, and food. From Dazaifu Tenmangu and Akizuki Castle to the Fukuoka City Museum, Gold Seal Park, and Fukuoka Castle, I had many opportunities to explore the region’s rich heritage.

The highlights for me were the surprisingly small Gold Seal, the soothing hot springs of Harazuru Onsen, the view from Shikanoshima, and the lively sounds of cicadas in Akizuki. Combined with excellent meals and the warm hospitality I encountered, it was a memorable and rewarding journey to Fukuoka.

That’s all.
