Enjoying Sushi and Sake in Tsukiji: A Luxurious Afternoon for Two (August 29, 2026)

At around 4:00 PM, my wife and I visited Tsukiji Sushiko Sohonten in Tsukiji.

We do not often find ourselves in the Tsukiji area, so this visit felt like a special occasion. Wanting to enjoy a relaxing and slightly luxurious afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to sushi together. It was our first time savoring sushi at a leisurely pace as a couple in the Ginza and Tsukiji area, which made the experience all the more memorable.

A Bright and Welcoming Atmosphere

The first thing that struck us when we entered was how bright and inviting the restaurant felt.

High-end sushi restaurants can sometimes seem intimidating, but this place had a relaxed atmosphere that made it easy to feel comfortable from the moment we walked in.

We were seated at the counter, where we could watch the sushi chefs skillfully prepare each dish right in front of us. The restaurant was not particularly crowded during our visit, which allowed us to enjoy our meal in a calm and unhurried setting.

Enjoying the Chef’s Selection of Sushi and Sashimi

For our meal, we ordered the chef’s selection of nigiri sushi and a chef’s selection sashimi platter.

While chatting with the staff, we asked for recommendations and had the opportunity to try several items that we would not normally order ourselves. This kind of personalized experience is one of the unique pleasures of dining at a traditional sushi counter and is difficult to find at conveyor-belt sushi restaurants or chain establishments.

One item that left a particularly strong impression was the tuna cheek sashimi.

It is not a cut that we often have the chance to eat, but its rich flavor and unique texture made it a memorable part of the meal. Experiences like this are part of what makes dining in Tsukiji so special.

Complementing the Meal with Three Sakes

To accompany the sushi, we enjoyed three different kinds of sake.

First was Shimeharitsuru, priced at ¥2,180 (excluding tax) for 300ml.

Next was Kokuryu Icchorai, also ¥2,180 (excluding tax) for 300ml.

Finally, we tried Zaku, priced at ¥2,600 (excluding tax) for 300ml.

Each sake had its own distinctive character and paired wonderfully with both the sashimi and sushi.

Spending a leisurely holiday afternoon enjoying good sake together was a luxury in itself.

Reasonably Priced by Tsukiji Standards

In Tsukiji, it is not uncommon to find high-end sushi restaurants where a meal can cost more than ¥50,000 per person.

Against that backdrop, Tsukiji Sushiko Sohonten felt relatively affordable while still offering an authentic sushi experience.

Being able to converse with the chefs and staff, try recommended seasonal items, and enjoy quality sake at a relaxed pace made the overall experience feel well worth the cost.

A Different Kind of Holiday Experience

What stood out most about this visit was not only the quality of the sushi, but also the restaurant’s bright and welcoming atmosphere.

Enjoying counter-style sushi in Tsukiji while sharing a few bottles of sake with my wife was a type of holiday experience we had rarely enjoyed before.

The visit reminded me that there are many ways to spend a relaxing and elegant afternoon.

If you are looking for an authentic sushi experience in Tsukiji without stepping into the ultra-premium price range, Tsukiji Sushiko Sohonten is well worth considering. We would definitely like to return again when the seasonal ingredients change and new specialties are available.

That’s all.
