[Akita & Iwate 3-Day Travelogue] Autumn in Tohoku: Breathtaking Views, Hot Springs, and Gourmet Delights

My wife and I took a 3-day, 2-night trip exploring Akita and Iwate in northern Japan. Here is our travel journal capturing three wonderful days of ultimate free-flowing hot springs, spectacular scenery, and lavish local cuisine!

Day 1: From Haneda to Akita! Relaxing at Shizukuishi Onsen “Gensen Ichizu Iwate Shizukuishi”

Travel and Check-in

  • 12:10 Arrived at Haneda Airport. Bought airport bentos (Soraben) and enjoyed lunch at the ANA Lounge with tea and coffee.
  • 13:30 Took the shuttle bus to the boarding gate.
  • 14:00 Departed Haneda (Flight NH405) for Akita Airport.
  • Upon arrival: Picked up a car from Orix Rent-A-Car and started our drive.
  • 17:10 Arrived at “Gensen Ichizu Iwate Shizukuishi”!

We took a moment to unwind with welcome drinks—beer and white wine! (*Welcome drinks are available until 18:00, and soft-serve ice cream is served until 21:00.)

Soothing River Sounds and Premium “Oushuku Onsen”

After leaving our bags in the room, we headed straight to the main bath and our room’s private open-air bath. Listening to the soothing sound of the river stream was pure relaxation.

[Oushuku Onsen Spring Quality Notes]

  • Spring Quality: Alkaline simple hot spring
  • Features: Flowing directly at 45°C (113°F) at over 100 liters per minute—100% natural hot spring water with no added water, heating, or circulation. It feels exceptionally gentle and silky on the skin.

Lavish Dinner Buffet & Tuna Dissection Show

Our dinner buffet started at 19:10, and it was incredible!

  • Fresh sashimi spread including red sea bream, salmon, cured mackerel, whelk, and salmon roe (Ikura).
  • Fresh tuna sashimi and tuna sushi served right after a live tuna dissection show—absolutely delicious!
  • Crispy, freshly fried tempura.
  • Rich and luxurious “Hewitt Dining Curry.”

Day 1 ended with complete satisfaction for both our eyes and stomachs!

Day 2: Lake Tazawa & Oga Peninsula! Breathtaking Views and Traditional Culture

Morning Bath & Sumptuous Breakfast Buffet

We spent the morning going back and forth between the main bath and our room’s private open-air bath.

At the 8:15 breakfast buffet, we enjoyed a luxurious sashimi feast featuring flounder, greenling, sea bass, tuna, and salmon. Since dining times were pre-allocated, the restaurant was comfortably uncrowded, allowing us to enjoy our breakfast completely stress-free. After breakfast, we took another refreshing dip in our open-air bath!

Lake Tazawa & Oga Namahage Museum

  • 10:00 Departed from the hotel.
  • Lake Tazawa: Visited the famous bronze statue of “Tatsuko.”
  • Oga Namahage Museum: We enjoyed both the exhibits and a live Namahage performance. Beyond the powerful spectacle, we were deeply moved by how the local people cherish and preserve this traditional culture.
  • Mayama Shrine: Paid our respects at the shrine and received a Goshuin (shrine stamp).

Stay at “Oga Resort Hotel Kiraraka”

Our accommodation for the night was “Oga Resort Hotel Kiraraka.” Our Japanese-Western style room (Special Room) with an indoor bath offered the most magnificent ocean view! We could truly feel the energy of nature surrounding the hotel.

The open-air bath draws water from Kanagasaki Onsen, a sodium-chloride spring. In the evening, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the sunset over the ocean.

[Dinner Menu] Tasting Akita’s Delicacies & Local Sake

For dinner, we enjoyed a traditional Kaiseki course packed with the blessings of Akita’s land and sea.

  • Appetizer: Simmered Aspara-na greens, Southern-style edible chrysanthemum, and Persimmon dressed in white tofu sauce
  • Sashimi: Pacific Bluefin Tuna, Needlefish, Turban Shell, and Young Yellowtail
  • Intermediate Dish: Sea Bream simmered with plum flavor
  • Main Course: Grilled Akita Beef on a Hot Slate (beef raised on Akita Komachi rice!)
  • Fried Dish: Monkfish, Okra, and Fig tempura
  • Rice: Maitake Mushroom cooked rice
  • Soup: Fish Cake & clear broth
  • Pickles: Iburi-gakko (smoked daikon radish) & Salt-koji bitter melon
  • Dessert: Purple Sweet Potato Ice Cream

[Sake & Whisky Pairing]

  • Yuki no Bosha Junmai Ginjo
  • Taiheizan Tenko Junmai Daiginjo
  • Japanese Whisky (Yamazaki / Hibiki)

It was a truly blissful time spent with magnificent food and fine sake.

Day 3: Heading Home & Final Gourmet Stops

Breakfast and Departure

We took our time enjoying a simple yet comforting traditional Japanese breakfast. We checked out at 8:00 AM and drove toward Akita Airport.

Along the way, we passed a “tunnel that looks like it’s swallowing you into a Namahage mask” and a giant Namahage statue, letting us soak in the unique Oga atmosphere until the very end.

Airport Highlights at Akita Airport

  • Royal Sky Lounge: Enjoyed glasses of Tazawa Lake Beer PILSNER (¥650 incl. tax).
  • Mugendo (after security check): Finished off with rich Hinai-dori Chicken Ramen (¥950 incl. tax).

Final Burger Stop in Tokyo

After landing at Haneda Airport, we took the Tokyo Monorail and JR train to Tokyo Station.

At “THE BEAT DINER” near the Marunouchi North Exit, we had the B.E.A.T. Burger (¥2,030 incl. tax) and Hoegaarden beers (¥750 incl. tax) from their seasonal beer festival before heading home safely.

Summary

This 2-night, 3-day trip was the perfect getaway filled with soothing hot springs, exceptional seafood and sake, breathtaking nature, and rich traditional culture. If you are planning a trip to the Akita and Iwate regions, we highly recommend following this itinerary!

That’s all.
